Gunite vs. Fiberglass vs. Vinyl Pools: Which Is Right for North Texas?

Before you even start comparing builders, there's a bigger decision that shapes everything else about your project: what your pool is actually made of. Homeowners across Plano, McKinney, Allen, and Frisco ask us about this constantly, because the three main options — vinyl liner, fiberglass, and gunite (poured concrete) — are genuinely different products with different price points, lifespans, and trade-offs.

Here's an honest breakdown of all three, including why we build almost exclusively in gunite for North Texas homes.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools are built with a steel or polymer wall frame and a fitted vinyl liner. They're the most affordable inground option upfront and remain the most common pool type installed nationally. The trade-off is the liner itself — it typically needs replacing every 7–15 years depending on water chemistry and sun exposure, and it's more vulnerable to punctures and fading than a hard shell or plaster surface.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass pools are pre-manufactured as a single shell off-site, then trucked in and dropped into an excavated hole. That's why they install so fast — often 3–4 weeks compared to months for gunite — and why they need very little ongoing maintenance; there's no plaster to resurface and no liner to replace.

The catch is customization. Because the shell is molded off-site, you're choosing from a manufacturer's catalog of shapes and sizes, and there are practical limits on how large a shell can be transported by truck. If you want a specific shape, an attached spa, or a pool sized to an unusual lot, fiberglass runs out of room to flex.

Gunite (Concrete) Pools

Gunite pools are built on-site: a steel rebar frame is set to your exact design, then structural concrete is shot over it under pressure and finished with plaster, quartz, or pebble. Because nothing is prefabricated, the design is completely custom — any shape, any size, any depth, integrated spas, sheer descents, tanning ledges, whatever the lot allows.

That customization and the on-site build process mean gunite pools take longer to build (typically 12–20 weeks) and cost more upfront than fiberglass or vinyl. In exchange, the structural shell itself is built to last 50+ years, with the surface finish needing a resurface roughly every 10–15 years — a far smaller job than replacing an entire shell or liner.

Why North Texas Soil Changes the Math

DFW sits on expansive clay soil that absorbs water and swells during wet stretches, then shrinks and cracks during our dry Texas summers. That constant movement is a real factor in how a pool holds up over decades, and it's the main reason most custom builders in North Texas — including us — build almost exclusively in gunite.

This isn't a knock on fiberglass everywhere — it's a great option in a lot of markets. It's specifically the clay soil across Plano, McKinney, Frisco, and the rest of DFW that tips the long-term calculation toward gunite for most of our clients.

So Which Should You Choose?

If budget and speed are your top priorities and you're comfortable with a catalog shape, fiberglass is a legitimate option. If you want the lowest possible entry price and don't mind a liner replacement down the road, vinyl works. But if you want a fully custom design, the longest structural lifespan, and a pool built specifically to handle North Texas ground conditions, gunite is the right call — which is exactly why it's the only material we build with.
